Hello, My Bonono’s!
It has been a while!
I must start with a confession. I took an unintentional extended break from my blog because life got a little busy. Unfortunately, during this break, I’ve let a lot of my good habits slip, and now I find myself back in an unhealthy space.
I was agitated with myself for slipping back into old habits after months of kicking butt. But following weeks of negative self-talk, I realised (today) that mentally berating myself is not going to spark action. Instead, I need to learn from this setback and create my refresh and reset plan.
So here I am – starting with a blog post!
It’s a common situation
One item on my action list is ‘Career’. I am half way through my working life and just don’t have the passion or motivation for it any more.
I did some research and found thousands of people who have switched careers, and it makes me think how can they stop the cogs of their world and shift over to something new, and I can’t! It seems like they can switch careers without worrying about being qualified, maintaining an income, or developing some anxiety disorder!
From meeting new people over the past months, I’ve realised that I am not unique in the slightest! This is such a common problem.
So, in an attempt to help others (and get back into one of my positive habits I have let slip a.k.a blogging) I have put together this article to share a little about my personal experience of longing to switch careers, as well as an alternate approach I have recently taken to tackle the situation.
I have been on a health and happiness journey for a little over 2-years, and over this time I have acquired a lot of general knowledge about nutrition, hormones, fertility, supplements, stress, sleep, self-development, goal setting…the list goes on.
The more I learn, the more I feel like this is something I want to do as a professional career. However, to restart my career in a sector that (if you’re going to be at the top) requires years of education to become a doctor just isn’t possible! I have a young family and responsibilities that don’t allow me to press pause and start from the bottom.
Given my situation, I’ve searched for other roots in the health industry, and found plenty of online courses. But then my next problem starts! My inner voice begins kicking and shouting with a plethora of excuses along the lines of…
- “How am I meant to fit in a full-time job, family life, and study! Impossible”
- “What happens if I spend all this money and time then realise it’s not what I want to do.”
- “I am too much of an introvert to do this kind of thing.”
As soon as a sliver of doubt slips in, it grows and grows until it inhibits me from doing anything.
For a whole year, I have been stuck! Unable to get out of this cycle of longing and sabotage.
But wait! Maybe we need to think differently
I was reading a book called, “You are a Badass” by Jen Sincero. In this book, Jen says,
“to act positively, you need first to overcome procrastination and hesitation. When we procrastinate, we let the fear of failure stop us from following through on decisions. If you think that you’re not qualified to perform a task, you’ll look for any reason not to try it. To overcome these excuses you need to convince yourself of your purpose”.
What an obvious, but a none-the-less insightful, idea. I need to stop thinking that I first need a certificate that proves I can help people. It isn’t about being an immediate “professional”, it’s about doing something; anything!
Finding career passion
With this nugget of wisdom, I decided to stop focusing on education options and instead spend that time exploring what my passion actually is. One exercise that is awesome (and I recommend) comes from a book called “The 10 Laws of Career Reinvention” by Pamela Mitchell. In there she asks you to imagine your ideal work day and write down (in detail) what it consists of.
Write as much detail as possible including things like,
- When does your workday start?
- Do you work alone?
- Do you do phone, Skype or face-to-face meetings? Do you do meetings at all?!
- Do you work in an office? If so, what does it look like?
- Do you travel for this job?
Get really specific and be totally honest. Your perfect working day should resonate with you on a deep level beyond money and status.
Your task is then to think about/design a job that embodies this ideal. But be realistic too! If you want to travel the world, then you might consider being a pilot is a good job. But in reality being a pilot means long hours, fast turnarounds (so not actually seeing a country), and missing out on family time.
When I did this exercise, I was reminded that although I want to help others with their health, I am also a creative soul, that yarns to design and create things too. In my ideal day, my whole morning was filled with painting, sketching, writing, designing or making. I had forgotten entirely about this huge part of myself because my health has been my priority for the past few years.
Self-reflection and understanding of values, passions, and goals is probably the most important thing you can do when changing careers midway through life. For this reason, I highly suggest taking a significant amount of time to dig around internally.
What’s next for me?
I feel a lot less pressure to try and find funding and time to become a doctor. Instead, I am going to combine creative writing with my health passion and post on this blog regularly, and then let the next steps naturally follow. I might experiment with video and sketches too – would you like to see that?
